Serving Documents for Sacramento Superior Court Cases

Sacramento Superior Court is one of the busiest courts in California, handling tens of thousands of cases each year across civil, criminal, family law, probate, and small claims divisions. When a case is filed here, the opposing party must be properly served with legal documents — and that service must comply with both California law and the court’s local rules.

We serve all document types associated with Sacramento Superior Court cases: summons and complaints, cross-complaints, subpoenas, motions, restraining orders, family law petitions, unlawful detainers, small claims filings, and any other process the court requires to be personally delivered. We also handle service of documents on attorneys of record when personal service on the party is required. Every service comes with a signed Proof of Service that meets the court’s filing standards — formatted correctly, with the right information, ready to submit to the clerk.

Sacramento Superior Court Locations

Sacramento County Superior Court operates three courthouse locations. Each handles different case types, and knowing which one your case belongs to matters for both service and filing.

Gordon D. Schaber Courthouse 720 9th Street, Sacramento, CA 95814 The main courthouse and administrative hub for Sacramento Superior Court. Handles civil unlimited jurisdiction cases (claims over $25,000), felony criminal cases, complex litigation, and most general civil matters. This is also where you’ll find the civil clerk’s office for filing in unlimited civil cases.

Carol Miller Justice Center 301 Bicentennial Circle, Sacramento, CA 95826 Handles civil limited jurisdiction cases (claims of $25,000 or less), small claims, misdemeanor criminal cases, and traffic matters. If your case involves a small claims filing or a limited civil complaint, this is your courthouse.

William R. Ridgeway Family Relations Courthouse 3341 Power Inn Road, Sacramento, CA 95826 The dedicated family law courthouse for Sacramento County. Handles divorce, legal separation, annulment, child custody, child support, spousal support, domestic violence restraining orders, paternity, and other family law matters. All family law filings go through this location.

If you’re unsure which courthouse handles your case, we can help you figure it out based on your case number and case type.

How It Works

Step 1 — Submit Your Documents

Complete our online intake form and upload the documents that need to be served. Tell us which Sacramento Superior Court location your case is in, select your service tier, and provide any information you have about the person being served.

Step 2 — We Serve Your Documents

Our registered process server personally delivers your documents to the named individual or authorized agent. For cases requiring service on multiple parties or at specific locations — including courthouse service on attorneys — we coordinate everything.

Step 3 — You Receive Proof of Service

We provide a signed, court-ready Proof of Service delivered to your inbox. If you need that Proof of Service filed with the court — or any other documents filed at the appropriate Sacramento courthouse — we handle it as part of our filing add-on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you file my Proof of Service at Sacramento Superior Court? Yes. We offer court filing at all three Sacramento Superior Court locations — the Gordon D. Schaber Courthouse, Carol Miller Justice Center, and the Ridgeway Family Relations Courthouse. Filing is a $30 add-on to any service.

How do I know which Sacramento courthouse my case is at? Your case number and case type determine the courthouse. Civil unlimited cases are at the main courthouse on 9th Street, limited civil and small claims are at Carol Miller Justice Center, and family law cases are at the Ridgeway courthouse on Power Inn Road. If you’re not sure, give us your case number and we’ll help you figure it out.

Do you serve documents inside the courthouse? Yes. If your situation requires service on an attorney or party at the courthouse — such as service of a motion or subpoena during a court appearance — we can coordinate that.

What’s the difference between service of process and court filing? Service of process is the physical delivery of legal documents to the person named in those documents. Court filing is submitting documents to the court clerk for inclusion in the official case record. Many situations require both — you serve the other party and then file the Proof of Service with the court. We handle both.

Can you serve documents for a Sacramento Superior Court case if the person lives in another county? Yes. The case may be filed in Sacramento Superior Court, but the person being served can live anywhere. We cover Sacramento, Placer, El Dorado, Yolo, and San Joaquin counties. If the person is outside our service area, we’ll let you know and can recommend options.
